Understanding Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a condition that affects the density and strength of your bones, making them more fragile and more likely to break, even during everyday movements or minor bumps.

In this section, you’ll find information about osteoporosis.

What is
osteoporosis?1

Osteoporosis is a bone disease—not a normal part of aging. Often called the “silent thief,” it is marked by the gradual weakening and deterioration of bone.

This bone loss involves a decrease in bone mineral density (BMD) and the breakdown of bone tissue, which can increase the risk of fractures.

The most common fractures occur in the spine, hip, shoulder, and wrist. In many cases, a fracture is the first warning sign of osteoporosis.

2.3 million Canadians are living with osteoporosis in 2024.

At least 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men will experience a fracture caused by osteoporosis during their lifetime. Fragility fractures account for 80% of fractures in postmenopausal women over the age of 50.1
